Limitations of Google Translate for Website Localisation

Unlock Global Audiences with Website Translation: Google Translate vs. Human Expertise
Posted: 18/07/2023

As the world grows ever more interconnected, website translation becomes pivotal to reach a global audience. One commonly used tool for this is Google Translate, a free multilingual service developed by Google. It’s quick, supports over 100 languages and boasts of a constantly learning AI. However, it does have certain limitations.Ā

The Drawbacks of Google Translate

  1. Complex Sentence Inaccuracy: Google Translate often fumbles with intricate sentences. Understanding context is a challenge, and it may misinterpret or oversimplify ideas, especially with idioms, metaphors, or non-literal language.
  1. Cultural Sensitivities: Google Translate struggles to adapt to cultural nuances intertwined with languages. This can lead to inappropriate or confusing translations.
  1. Industry-Specific Vocabulary: Google Translate often comes up short when handling specialised language. It might not recognise the specific usage of certain words within a context, causing inaccuracies.

  1. Absence of the Human Touch: By its very nature, an automatic translation tool lacks the human nuance vital for effective communication. Subtle tones, humour, or emotions often get lost in translation.
  1. Formatting Hitches: Google Translate doesn’t always retain the original formatting of the text, causing problems when translating websites where formatting is key to understanding the content.Ā
  1. Legal and Confidentiality Concerns: For sensitive content, Google Translate may not be the best choice. Its terms of service allow it to use, host, store, and reproduce the content.

Conclusion

Google Translate can be a handy tool for rough, quick translations, but its limitations render it unsuitable for certain tasks. For professional or specialised translations, it is advisable to engage a human translator or a professional translation service. They can better understand and interpret language subtleties and complexities and ensure your content’s confidentiality, something Google Translate cannot guarantee. After all, the aim is to convey not just words, but also the meaning and tone of your original content, often requiring a human touch.Ā
